A hand-built offset electric acclaimed luthier Uberfrank, with a chambered body made from Welsh Mountain Solidwool composite. Serial #24-019, built June 2024, ex-demo.

Overview

Built by Uberfrank Custom Guitars, the Solidwool Spellbinder is one of the most genuinely singular guitars you are likely to encounter. The body material is a compressed wool composite sourced from Welsh Mountain sheep, chambered for resonance and weight. It is a serious instrument built with a clear point of view: sustainable materials, reclaimed components, and a tonal character that has no obvious precedent. For the right player, this will be a difficult guitar to put down.

Tone and Feel

The Solidwool body has a warmth and evenness that is hard to pin down through conventional tonewood comparisons. Acoustically it is balanced and sustains well, with a midrange character that feels full without being thick. The gold foil pickups are warm and open with a clear, present top end, and the differing output levels between bridge and neck positions are worth noting. The 4-way selector adds a useful series option that thickens the combined sound considerably. At 25.5 inches the scale length is on the longer side, giving the guitar good string tension and note definition across the board.
