A handmade S-style electric from Surrey-based luthier Mike Hobbs, built to replicate the tone and feel of a 1962 modes. Seafoam Green relic nitrocellulose finish with mint green guard.

Overview

Built by Mike Hobbs, this guitar reflects a genuine engagement with what made the 60s style guitars so enduring. Two-piece alder body, maple C-shape neck, rosewood fingerboard with clay dots, and Monty's 62 hand-wound pickups throughout. The relic treatment is considered rather than cosmetic: it gives the guitar the broken-in quality that takes years to arrive on a factory instrument.

Tone and Feel

Alder is the natural choice for an S-style build and Mike uses it well here. The body is balanced and responsive with a clarity that suits all three pickup positions. The Monty's 62 hand-wound pickups have the chime and glass of the original design with a slightly more refined character in the upper mids. Good tonal range across the 5-way selector, from the full neck warmth to the quack of positions 2 and 4. The rosewood fingerboard with clay dots adds a period-correct feel, and the C profile neck is easy to live with across a long session.
